Baby Boomers Retire to Mexico

Baja Retirement

Despite reports citing the real estate frenzy is approaching a freeze, there is one demographic that will continue to heat the market: The Baby Boomers worldwide.

Why are thousands of Americans choosing Mexico for retirement or for a second home? Boomers who dream of retiring to sun-drenched beaches and plentiful recreation quickly find that Baja California fits their needs.

Golf in Rosarito or EnsenadaMexico has it all - waterfront properties, golf communities, active lifestyle communities, active adult and age restricted communities, oceanfront condominiums and condo hotels. Baby Boomers can enjoy a great climate, great food, a rich culture, and fabulously friendly people. The cost of living is far less throughout Mexico than in the US. In fact, in the northern Baja areas such as Rosarito and Ensenada, oceanfront and ocean view homes can be purchased for hundreds of thousands of dollars less than just across the border in San Diego.

Although the northern Baja coastline has long been considered a party destination for Southern California students or a low-rent getaway for retirees on a budget, it is undergoing a real estate boom. This boom is coming primarily from Americans who are tapping their equity back home to buy a weekend getaway or retirement home south of the border.

Ocean front and ocean view living is still affordable. Even though property prices in Mexico are creeping up, the costs of homes are still low. In addition, there are low property taxes and you frankly get more home for your dollar! There is no “typical” retiree coming to Mexico, either. You will find some from every walk of life with their reasons for moving to Mexico to be as varied as the people who make them:

With satellite, cable TV, and the Internet, there is no problem keeping up with news and entertainment. American food is available at most markets and if you are in Baja you will certainly find a Wal Mart, Costco, Home Depot, Office Depot, or McDonalds, as well as other well-know chains nearby.Baby Boomers Retire to Mexico

Good healthcare is widely available. Mexico has good doctors, dentists, hospitals and other medical specialists. There are a range of insurance services available for you to buy to safeguard you and your dependants from the cost of private medical bills.

Retirement should not automatically translate to a retirement from your life! In fact Mexico's retiree's are far from "retired." Many people who have retired in Mexico enjoy and savor their active and fulfilling lifestyles and numerous activities in Mexico. Mexico's pace of life is ideal for retirement - you can relax, and you can still lead an active retirement. Stress levels are insignificant here.

The Mexican people are gentle and willing to welcome you into their hearts. You will have more time to explore other interests, travel, visit family or have family visit you, less stress, and most probably someone else to take care of the everyday chores. The low cost of living allows you to splurge on luxuries that would be prohibitive anywhere else and to take advantage of world-class resorts right in your own neighborhood.

  • It is estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau that the second home purchases from Baby Boomers will reach 64 million units by the year 2010.
  • The Mexico Association of Real Estate Professionals estimate that at least 1.5 million Americans own homes in Mexico. Further, it is expected that by 2025 this number will reach 12 million. Even the American Association of Retired Professionals ranks Mexico one of the top five places in the world for retiring Americans.
  • According to the US State Department, more than 500,000 Americans currently live throughout Mexico.
  • In 1997, changes in real estate laws in Mexico made it easier for foreigners to own property in Mexico through a bank trust known as a Fideicomiso.
  • Real estate agents estimate at least 80% of the people buying on the Baja coastline are Baby Boomers who are spending $300,000 and up to purchase high-rise oceanfront condominiums and large homes with enough room for grandkids, pets and toys.
  • Just within the past few years, financing, escrow and title insurance have become common services in Mexico.
