Mayors Team Up to Reduce Border-Crossing Wait Times

The mayors of San Diego and Tijuana are banding together to reduce border wait times. They say speeding up

border crossings is critical to the region's well being. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

City of San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and Tijuana Mayor Jorge Ramos says no one should wait for more than 20

minutes to cross the border going north or south.

They say longer delays mean the region loses billions of dollars in revenue and tens of thousands of jobs.

The mayors plan to sign a letter of intent this evening at the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce's annual dinner to

make the port of entry a priority for each administration.

Bill Harris is a spokesman for Mayor Sanders.

Harris: I think that by joining together, both mayors are going to gain a bit more traction in terms of keeping

this at the top of the agendas in their countries.

The Mayors' letter says they'll each establish working groups focused on the San Ysidro border crossing redesign.

They say they'll work to make sure the federal project meets local needs.
