Mexico Travel Warning in Perspective

Given all the press surrounding violence in Baja, I found this information very insightful. We hope you will too.

Doing the Math

From September to November, 2007 14 attacks were reported on tourists in the border region. During the same time period there were 27 tourist attacks in California State Parks.

A recent press report sited that more Americans were arrested by Tijuana police than in any other foreign destination city. Of course! Tijuana was the #1 foreign city visited by Americans, simply because of the ease of it. More than 60 million persons crossed the border into Baja California last year. That is more than 1500 times more than the number who visited London.

In 2007 352 people were murdered in greater Tijuana. However, compared to US cities of about the same population, Tijuana falls in the 'also ran' category with 17.5 murders per 100,000 people. This compares to a safer San Diego, on the other side of the line with 5 murdered per 100K. However, a great number of US cities have higher murder rates; like Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Las Vegas and the winner (loser) New Orleans with more than 3 times the murder rate of Tijuana. Yet there is no travel warning for these cities?

I lived in Los Angeles for 30 years and my biggest fear while I was there was to be shot on the freeway, when I took my kids to McDonalds, when I was going to the mall, or some government agency where outraged shootings happen with no rhyme or reason. I'm sure you have been watching the news and know what I am talking about.

Police used to call the freeway shootings “FREEWAY RAGE,” but nevertheless people were shot and some were killed. I know recently there have been shootings in high schools, government offices, malls and some other places I can't remember right now, but in all cases innocent people were killed. Here we have shootings between drug dealers, which, by the way there are plenty of in the U.S as well, but they call that “GANG BY SHOOTINGS.” I don’t hear any government agency issuing warnings not to send your kids to school or the media playing it over and over. The shootings that occurred at these places are aimed at innocent people that have nothing to do with the shooters' rage.

Obviously some of the news about Mexico occurred. I am not going to deny that; but not to the extent the U.S. media plays it up to be. It is an insult from them and from anyone who believes the hype being presented in the press. It is important to admit what’s going on in your own country before you criticize your neighbor. I been living in Rosarito Beach for the last 6 years now and I am not afraid to walk the streets, visit my favorite restaurants, go shopping, go to the movies, or to any government agency.

I will take you out of my email listing unless I hear otherwise from you. I wish you and your family the best and hope you will never encounter any of the countless horrors discussed above and that you and your family always live a peaceful life.

Remember that in a time of bad press, you can get lots more for your money.
